Dr. Anthony Bernier will present paper on making library space for young adults
Dr. Anthony Bernier, assistant professor,
will present a conceptual paper entitled "Making Library Space for Young Adults: Three Stages Toward Success", at the International Federation of Libraries Associations's (IFLA) Navigating with Youth Satellite Meeting
in Montreal, Canada, on Wednesday August 6, 2008.
From the abstract:
What does developmentally-appropriate space mean for young people? Are innovations only for new, large, and shiny libraries? What have we learned from new spaces that can be more broadly applicable? What, for instance, can teen vernacular aesthetics teach us about responsive design for them, rather than merely re-decorating spaces based on adult conventions? Through case studies, this presentation identifies three levels that model incorporation of developmentally-appropriate aesthetic principles for young adults: simple alterations of existing space, re-designing existing space, and entirely new building designs.
