Electronic Lists

Electronic Lists are topical electronic mail discussion groups in which you may participate as an active speaker or as a passive reader. You must subscribe to lists to receive the conversations and reply to the sender or to the entire list of subscribers.

The School of Library and Information Science maintains three lists:

In addition, the School hosts the following list for the California library community:

Slisadmin is the only required list for students. Subscribing to other lists is optional.

Be selective when subscribing to lists. Some electronic discussion groups generate an enormous number of messages.

If you have a SLIS e-mail account
Proper e-mail management is a critical responsibility. SLIS e-mail accounts have limited storage capacity. If you receive large volumes of e-mail, it will certainly be necessary to check your account daily to save and/or delete messages. Failure to manage your account could result in the removal of e-mail privileges. For instructions on checking the size of your SLIS e-mail account, see the following: slisweb.sjsu.edu/tutorials/diskusage/checkdu.html.

Subscription Management:

Sending Messages to the List

Messages to all subscribers of the list must be sent to the proper address. See instructions for sending messages to the list.

In most e-mail lists, all subscribers can post messages. However, this is not true of slisadmin. Only administrators, faculty and office staff can post to slisadmin.

Searching the List Archives and Viewing Archived Messages

The SLIS lists were migrated to a new list managament system (called "Mailman") on November 14th, 2007. Unfortunately, there was no way to effectively migrate the existing list archives over to the new system. Consequently, there are two separate procedures for accessing list archives.
